4th graders will participate in a variety of problem solving activities. Some of these will be extensions of the math lessons done in their classrooms. For example, at the beginning of the year they will be learning about place value in their classrooms. When the students come to AE they will learn about number systems from history, such as Roman Numerals and Mayan numbers. Some of these systems, such as Roman numerals, do not use place value. Others, like Mayan numbers, use place value based on a number other than 10. Other lessons will be based on the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. In the second quarter students will be learning a variety of problem solving strategies and applying them to multi-step story problems.
